Kindergarten

Nurturing and protecting childhood in a beautiful, homelike setting is a key element of the Kindergarten program. The teacher weaves daily and weekly rhythms into the cycles of the year. A healthy balance between creative play, music, movement and artistic activity is maintained.

The Waldorf Kindergarten is structured to provide a gradual transition from the life of the home to the life of a grade school classroom. It is based upon simple, yet profound concepts of imitation, repetition, and creative play. Children will become accustomed to working within a group, listening to stories, interacting with a teacher and following a daily routine. Activities are carefully developed and guided by the teacher who understands how the child’s individual being is shaped through encouragement of creative play, movement and imitation. Sequencing, sensory integration, hand-eye coordination, tracking, and appreciation of the beauty of language are all foundation skills fostered in the Kindergarten class.

Children in the Kindergarten will participate in:

Creative Play:

Children are encouraged to follow their own initiative and imagination to adapt a variety of natural toys and materials. The teacher is involved in daily classroom preparations and an atmosphere of work permeates the room.

Outdoor Play:

The class will share outdoor play through all seasons and weather of the year. Gardening, nature walks, and woodworking are some activities introduced outdoors.

Circle:

The class is brought together for storytelling, puppetry, as well as group songs, verses and movement.

Healthy, Organic Snack:

Children learn to prepare a table and enjoy eating pleasantly with each other. Many days, snack preparation will be a class activity.

Artistic Activity:

Wet-on-wet watercolor painting, beeswax modeling, crayon work and handwork activities are part of the weekly rhythm.

“I think that it is not exaggerated to say that no other educational system in the world gives such a central role to the arts as the Waldorf School Movement. There is not a subject taught that does not have an artistic aspect. Even mathematics is presented in an artistic fashion and related via dance, movement or drawing to the child as a whole. Steiner’s system of education is built on the premise that art is an integral part of human endeavors. He gives it back its true role. Anything that can be done to further his revolutionary educational ideals will be of the greatest importance.”
